The iPad is just the signal flag…

Apple’s iPad, (which is really just a larger version of its iTouch, which itself is a larger version of the iPhone,) is significant not just for its own company’s sake and for getting all the press, but as the announcement that, rather than a scattered device here and a device there, we will now have a huge, invested market of portable Web/info devices ranging from phones with benefits to readers to netbooks to laptops with detachable parts for reading, and so on.  In addition to the Sony readers, the Kindle, the Nook, Google’s new toy and the iPad, there are also out (or out in a few months,) the HP Slate reader, Dell Streak, Joo Joo Pad and Tablet, Viliv X70 Reader, Notion Ink Tablet, and the Lenovo Ideapad. And a lot of them can make use of the Amazon and iPad stores, plus the many more retailing of newspapers, magazines, books and online content. So really, any way you want to read electronic text and sometimes pictures, there are plenty devices rolling out. (But no, print is not going to die.)
